Fresh air, rain or shine
Acclaim® Awning Window
On their own or paired with another window, Acclaim® awning windows provide additional ventilation and light to a room.
Awning windows are hinged at the top and open from the bottom, meaning you can let fresh air in and stay clear of the weather, even in a light rain. Renewal by Andersen's awning replacement windows are a great option ideal for maximizing a room’s view AND its ventilation.
They are an excellent choice for above sinks, counters, or doors where opening requires a reach. In addition, they pair well with other windows, especially large or non-operable picture windows.

How does an Acclaim™ awning window work?
Like its sibling, the casement window, the awning window is often called a “crank window” or a “crank-out window”. This is because it is a single sash that opens outward via a crank handle. Unlike a casement, however, which opens perpendicular to the ground, the awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward, parallel to it.
Acclaim™ awning windows have tuck-away hardware, meaning the handle folds in when not in use, so it does not stick out into your space.
If you have insect screens for your awning windows, they will be on the interior side of the sash — as opposed to a double-hung, where they are on the exterior.
What are the advantages to an awning window?
Awning windows have two standout aspects: their orientation and their ventilation. Like casements, awnings offer ventilation from all the way around the sash. And because they open outward from the top, they form a…well, an awning… over the window opening. Meaning you can enjoy all that fresh air even in light rain.
What’s the best location for an awning window?
Because of their versatility, energy efficiency, big views, and big ventilation, awnings have applications all over the home.
We see many of our homeowners pairing awnings with other styles, such as above or below picture windows. They are also frequently placed above/behind sinks or in stairwells or other places where ventilation is a bonus but opening the window might require a reach. Bathrooms and kitchens are some of the most common rooms we see awnings in — but they really do work throughout the home.
What are common awning window sizes? And how do I measure an awning window?
Operable awning windows have a surprisingly large range of sizes. Generally speaking, they have a width range of 16-60", and a height range of 17-48". However, their measurements are constrained by a measurement called “United Inch Limitation”. Meaning, the height plus length cannot exceed a set total of 96".
So, you could have an awning window that is 48" high, but it could only be a maximum of 48" wide. (H) 48” + (L) 48” = 96”
An awning window that is the maximum width, 60", could only be measured at 36" high. (H) 36” + (L) 60” = 96”
How much do awning windows cost?
Each of our windows are custom-crafted to fit the exact opening in your home. The cost of your Acclaim™ awning windows will depend on numerous factors, including the size, and the options you choose like hardware and grilles, as well as which glass you use or whether you are using a coastal/impact resistant window (not available in all areas). With Renewal by Andersen’s full-service model, your installation is always included, as is the fully transferrable Nation’s Best Warranty.

How long do awning windows last?
Window replacement is not a task most homeowners have ever done. And most people only want to ever do it once in their lives, so getting a window that is designed to work as smoothly as the day it was installed decades down the road is important.
That’s why our engineers are always hard at work…and why we test and test and test again. Recently, we pulled a batch of our original windows from the home they had been installed in more than two decades ago.* That’s 20 years of extreme Minnesota weather — bitter, brutal winters; hot, muggy summers.
And what did we find? After all those years of enduring Mother Nature’s mood swings…they passed our battery of performance tests with flying colors. After two decades in a real family home, facing real weather…they still looked brand new, and they still opened and closed as easily as the day they were installed.**
Your Renewal by Andersen awning replacement windows are scientifically proven to stand the test of time—and we back that up with some of the most robust limited warranties in the industry today.
*Based on testing of 10 double-hung units 20 years after installation.
**Testing per ASTM E2068.
Is an awning window secure?
The Acclaim® awning window has sash locks mounted on both sides of the frame to securely tighten the sash to the frame. Multiple weatherstrips provide a weathertight seal when sash is closed and locked.
Plus, all Renewal by Andersen windows are tested for forced entry resistance in accordance with ASTM F588.
Are there drawbacks to awning windows?
Because awning windows open outward, the exterior of the sash could be more exposed to the elements than, say, that of a double-hung. Fibrex® material is exceptionally strong, low-maintenance, and holds up great in every climate, so they are quite durable — but even so, they can get dirtier faster, which is a concern for some homeowners. If you live somewhere you may have your windows cranked wide-open year round, you might want to consider an alternative style.
The other consideration is that awnings do not meet egress requirements, so they are not suitable for rooms where that is a need, such as basement bedrooms.
What are the alternatives to an awning window?
Casement windows are an alternative that preserve the easy reach to open and provide maximum ventilation but can also be ordered to meet egress requirements.*
If you like the large expanse of glass and big views, but want something with more of a space-saving aspect (maybe it faces out on to a deck or walkway or porch), a great alternative are gliders (or sliders), which also do not protrude into a room (they slide on the horizontal plane, as opposed to cranking outward).
If you are looking for alternatives for cost or energy efficiency reasons, using a fixed or picture window, or a combination of fixed and operable windows may help you to keep the view and cut some of the costs.
