Acclaim® Picture Window
Showcase the view and let Mother Nature take center stage with the exclusive Acclaim® picture window from Renewal by Andersen. Picture windows are extremely efficient, fixed-frame units that, on their own, are not operable, but pair beautifully with other operable windows (and can stand alone, as well). Their stationary design allows for much larger sizes than a venting window, and makes them highly energy efficient.
Our Fibrex® material can easily support the weight of the heavy glass commonly needed for large picture windows. It also allows for thinner frames, which means maximal glass space, so you can let in as much light as possible and get every inch of that amazing view.
Acclaim™ picture windows are an excellent choice for letting in light from hard to reach spaces, like high walls in a vaulted room. A combination of picture window with operable replacement window adds a functional element to the aesthetic one. Pair a casement window on either side to increase ventilation, combine different sized picture windows for a dramatic look, or surround your patio door with long picture windows to create a wall of glass.

How does an Acclaim™ picture window work?
No, this isn’t a trick question. While, yes, a picture window is inoperable, that doesn’t mean it isn’t working hard. In fact, it’s doing ALL the work in this relationship. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view and the energy efficiency.
Picture windows are stationary, or fixed, windows that do not open. Because there are no moving parts, and no opportunity for drafts, picture windows are our most energy efficient window.
They excel at bringing in expansive views and large amounts of light, and are especially popular for places where you aren’t needing to open or close a window anyway, such as high walls, stairwells, above other windows and doors.
And, of course, picture windows are great team players if you want to pair them with operable windows, such as casements/awnings, or double-hung windows, to get the ventilation in addition to the views.
Is a picture window fixed? Can you get a picture window that opens?
A picture window is stationary and inoperable. For large windows that are operable (provide ventilation), an awning is one example of an alternative.
What are the advantages to a picture window?
What are the advantages? How much time do we have?
Picture windows are:
- Available in a HUGE range of sizes. Want a wee tiny picture window (or a series of them) that’s smaller than a record album jacket? We can do that. Or… do you want a breathtaking expanse of glass in a window that is bigger than a regulation-size pool table? Think big, because that is possible, too.
- Energy efficient. Their non-operable nature means they are fully sealed, so there’s no opportunity for air infiltration. And, of course, with Fibrex® composite material’s low thermal transmittance (700 times less than aluminum), they are well-insulated. You can further configure them with glass options to make them even more efficient.
- Potentially less expensive. Again, because of their no moving parts and simpler design, picture windows can be less expensive than an operable window with a similar size and glass-option configuration.
- Space-conscious. They don’t open out onto walkways or patios. They don’t require a reach to operate. Picture windows are ideal for places where you want more light and more view — but don’t need the complication of “how do we use this window we paid for?” Put them in banks of windows above other windows. Place them in stairwells or on vaulted ceilings. Use them above an entry door.
What’s the best location for a picture window?
Because of their versatility, stationary nature, energy efficiency, and big views, picture windows have applications all over the home.
They are frequently placed above/behind sinks, atop other windows or patio doors, or in stairwells and other places where an operable window wouldn’t make sense because of the inaccessibility. Bathrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways, and entranceways are all common locations.
What are common picture window sizes? How big can a picture window be? What is the minimum size picture window?
Picture windows can be very large or very small. Size limitations depend in part on how they are being used, what type of glass you have, or which options/upgrades you choose, but generally speaking, they have a width range of 10.5-108 inches, and a height range of 10.5-108 inches.* However, their measurements are constrained by a measurement called “United Inch Limitation”. Meaning, the height plus length must be at least 22 inches, and cannot exceed a set total of 170 inches.
There are also minimum and maximums depending on the combination. This means if you have a picture window where either the width or height is the minimum size of 10.5 inches, the other dimension must be at least 11.5 inches. (H)10.5” + (L)11.5” = 22”
Conversely, if you have a picture window where either width or height is the maximum of 108 inches, the other dimension cannot exceed 62 inches. (H)108” + (L)62” = 170”.
To sum it up, the long and the short of it is (no pun intended), picture windows have a wide range of sizes: you can get one not much bigger than an average-sized toaster oven...or have one made that's wider than your loveseat and taller than the installers who are putting it in!
*Not all glass options available in all size configurations. For specific maximum and minimum size combinations and glass options, schedule a consultation to speak with a design consultant.
Are picture windows expensive?
Because they do not have moving parts, picture windows can be less expensive than an operable window of similar size. Their excellent energy efficiency also contributes to them potentially having an overall lower cost to own over time.
How much do picture windows cost?
Each of our windows are custom-crafted to fit the exact opening in your home. The cost of your Acclaim™ picture windows will depend on numerous factors, including the size, and the options you choose like hardware and grilles, as well as which glass you use or whether you elect a coastal/impact resistant window (where available). With Renewal by Andersen’s full-service model, your installation is always included, as is the fully transferrable Nation’s Best Warranty.

What are the alternatives to a picture window?
If you like the large expanse of glass and big views, as well as the space saving aspect, but want something with ventilation, a great alternative are gliding (or sliding) windows, which also do not protrude into a room (they slide on the horizontal plane, as opposed to cranking outward). (Some sliding window configurations include a fixed sash, as well).
If you do not need or want ventilation, but want a window that provides a view AND has some architectural flair, consider a specialty window. These are windows that are not the standard rectangle/square shape. Acclaim™ specialty windows come in 16 standard shapes, as well as custom-designed options.
