Why Choose Double-Hung Windows

FAQs About Double-Hung Windows
How does an Acclaim™ double-hung window work?
A double-hung window is made up of two operable sashes that slide up and down. You can open the top, the bottom, or both together.
What are the advantages to a double-hung window?
The double-hung is a classic because there are a lot of advantages. Our Acclaim™ double-hung windows feature a tilt-to-wash system—meaning both sashes can tilt inward so you can clean them from inside the house…great for multiple-story homes!
Because the sashes each move up and down instead of out, you can open them without impeding on the space in your home or outside into landscaping or walkways. It makes them great for smaller rooms or for entertaining spaces like dining rooms or decks or patios.
Those dual sashes also mean this style window has excellent ventilation and air flow. Open both, and cool air comes in the bottom; warm air flows out the top.
And, as an added bonus, being able to open only the top sash means you can get ventilation and fresh air, but still keep the lower sash down, helping keep kids and pets closer to ground level safer. (Learn more about window safety and our Look Out for Kids program here).
What makes Fibrex® composite material a good choice for double-hung window?
Fibrex® composite material is a great choice for a double-hung window. Because it resists rot, decay and fungal growth, and won’t flake, blister, peel, pit or corrode* and because it retains its stability and rigidity, even in extreme temperatures, it is a low-maintenance solution for all climates. Meaning you can have the most popular window style…no matter where you live!

Can I customize my double-hung window?
Absolutely! All of Renewal by Andersen’s replacement windows are customizable. Your double-hung window is custom made to fit YOUR exact opening.
Visit our options page to learn more about all of the exterior and interior colors and finishes (including real-wood interiors), glass and grille options, and more.
In addition, Acclaim™ double-hung windows offer a variety of sash configurations (including cottage style and custom ratios) and two different check-rail options.
Are double-hung windows more expensive than a fixed window or a picture window?
Fixed and picture windows are often less expensive than comparable operational windows (like a double hung) of a similar size, due to their lack of moving parts and because they only have a single insulated glass unit (IGU) as opposed to two in a double-hung. (Fixed windows are also exceptionally energy efficient for the same reason.)
Double-hung windows pair nicely with fixed windows, so if cost is a concern, you could consider using a mix of both operational and non for all of the beauty, view, and architectural interest, and a bit less of the expense. Schedule a free design consultation today to explore your options!
Are double-hung windows removeable?
Both the upper and lower sash tilt in for easy cleaning. And yes, the sashes can be removed if necessary. Contact your local Renewal by Andersen location to discuss service or repairs if you need to replace a sash.
What are the alternatives to a double-hung window?
For a similar look, but even more ventilation, casement windows can be customized with grille patterns to simulate the look of a double-hung window, which is a great if you have to meet certain requirements for historical accuracy. If you like the space saving aspect of a double-hung, a great alternative are gliding (or sliding) windows, which also do not protrude into a room (they slide on the horizontal plane, as opposed to the double-hung window's vertical plane of operation).
If you are looking for alternatives for cost or energy efficiency reasons, using a combination of fixed and operable windows may help you to keep the view and cut some of the costs.
